Research Topic: Comparing irrigation methods/technologies (micro-sprinkler, drip, border/basin, can)

Which activities have you participated in as part of the RARSUS project?

Our field activities include soil permeability measurements and ring tests. Measurements of the dimensions of the different plots and to carry out surveys on the management of their perimeter or parcels. Also, participation in the collection of meteorological data.

What is your role within the project? What outcomes are you responsible for?

I am a RARSUS Fellow (Master student) i.e. a trainee. I am responsible for the following results:

  • The characterization of the physical and human environment of the study area;
  • The results of infiltration tests and ring tests performed in the field;
  • The results of the irrigation parameters such as those relating to the mobilization of water, the consumption of cultivated crops, the hydrodynamic properties of the soil and the retention of water in the soil.

Tell us about the research you are going to conduct:

This topic aims at a comparison of technologies for water application in the field considering irrigation by micro-sprinkler, drip, border/small basins and can. Criteria for comparison are, for example, irrigation application efficiency, water productivity, infrastructural (equipment-related) prerequisites, handling, and labor requirements. The objective of this study is to propose a more efficient irrigation system to farmers.

What are the personal achievements or successes you’ve had so far?

The internship allowed us to put into practice our theoretical knowledge carried out on the grounds. We learned how to do soil infiltration tests, how to talk to the farmers and especially we improved on the notions of small irrigation.

The RARSUS project for me is…

a solution to ensure the sustainable development of urban and semi-urban areas which resides in an adequate management of the risks in the system of supply of resources such as water, energy and food. Project research will identify options and assess the risk of energy supply in perspective with sustainable agriculture.
