SUMMARY:Training Workshop on Proposal Writing and Funding Opportunities for Students and Young Researchers
DESCRIPTION:The Training Workshop on Writing Successful Scholarship/Project Proposal and Funding Opportunities for Young Scholars and Academic Practitioners\, organized within the frame of the RARSUS Project\, will take place on the 30th September 2019 – 04th October 2019 in Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey. \nLearning Objectives\nUpon completion of this workshop participants should be able to: \n\ngather information needed to create a complete scholarship/project proposal\,\nidentify “red flags” in project proposals\,\ncreate a competitive proposal package\, and\ncultivate relationships with potential donor organizations.\n\nDescription\nA mix of (guest) lectures\, class discussions/exercises\, case studies and online lectures will be used to achieve the objective of the workshop. The workshop is intended for Master students\, PhD students and academic practitioners who are interested in writing research proposals and to be informed about funding opportunities from donor organizations. English and French will be the working languages of the workshop.

SUMMARY:RARSUS Online Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The RARSUS Online Summer School is a two week event that pulls together the expertise and contribution of all project partners and external partners of the consortium. Applications for the summer school are open to qualified Master students (or PhD students) in fields related to water and energy management\, who are currently enrolled at partner universities. \nThe Summer School begins with an introductory webinar featuring a welcome note from one of the project leads and a short presentation about the general concepts and the importance of resource supply for sustainable urban development\, followed by a Q&A with the speakers. During the following two weeks\, participants engage in the topics of the summer school with individual e-learning courses as well as webinars offered by experts from the water and energy sectors. \nAll registered students take part in the summer school through participation in the e-learning and webinar sessions. Participants are encouraged to support their learning through reading\, reflection\, and writing. At the end\, they are expected to undertake two forms of assessments: writing an individual article or project idea and conducting group work with a presentation at the end. Details of both assessment formats are presented at a later stage. \nIntroductory Webinar\nThe summer school will kick off with an introductory webinar featuring a welcome talk and a short presentation about the background and the concept. Starting right after the webinar\, a discussion forum will be open to participants\, where they can ask questions related to the courses and share their experience. Limited tutoring will be provided by content experts in the second day within the time frame of their module. However\, the forum will stay open even after that\, allowing participants to keep on discussing the topics. \nE-Learning\nAfter the webinar\, participants will improve their specialized knowledge through six self-paced e-courses. Two courses will be the same for all students\, while the other four are targeting participants with a water or energy background or related disciplines. The e-courses are self-paced and consist of video lectures\, interactive lessons\, external resources\, and exercises. \n\nE-learning Module 1: Risk and Vulnerability – Theory and Assessment\nE-learning Module 2: Resilience & Climate Change in African Cities\nE-learning Module 3: Climate-resilient Energy Supply Infrastructure\nE-learning Module 4: Water\, Energy and Food Interactions in Urban Contexts\nE-learning Module 5: Hydrology-based Approaches for Developing and Operating Infrastructure for Water Management in Urban Settings\nE-learning Module 6: Spatial Planning in the Context of Urban Water Management\n\nAll students wishing to take part in the 2019 online summer school must successfully complete the e-learning by the end of the two weeks. \nWebinar / E-Lecture Series\nA series of webinars will be offered to participants. SUMMARY:Session at the ALT Online Winter Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:This session will share experiences from a recent online summer school\, designed and coordinated by the Pan African Cooperation and Educational Technologies (PACET) section at the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). The 2 week event was studied by postgraduate students located in Germany and Sub-Saharan Africa (Niger\, Mali and Algeria)\, with input and supervision from experts in water and energy management at higher education institutions\, internal/external project partners and other UN organisations. \nDue to the challenges presented by local infrastructures\, the importance of clear pedagogical design\, communication and the adaptability of chosen technologies was central to the event’s success. Furthermore\, a schedule of live webinars\, interactive online modules\, group work/presentations\, reflective writing and peer review made for a highly ambitious programme; both in its delivery and for students who participated. \nThe tweetchat will focus on some of these activities\, sharing how they were structured to form a coherent study programme\, whilst also facilitating a dialogue amongst the ALT community about how online delivery can be achieved despite challenging circumstances. Of particular interest will be the exploration of issues less common in ‘Global North’ distance education\, or where access to suitable devices/internet connectivity might be a barrier to engagement. Anonymised student feedback will also form part of this discussion. \nThe event was the final activity of a larger project that aims to establish long-standing research-based cooperation between German and African partners in the area of sustainable resource supply management in urban and semi-urban regions. \nThe proposed hashtag for this session will be #OnlineEduAfrica.
